Can-Am Spyder Roadster 'Ready To Ride' Reverse Trike starting @ $15,000 USD (available late 2007 - order now)

This is the new Can-Am Spyder Grand Sport Roadster made by Bombardier Recreational Products in Canada.  They also make some other name brand products you've heard of such as: Sea-doo watercraft, Ski-doo snowmobiles, Johnson and Evinrude boat motors, the Can-Am line of ATVs, and Rotax engines, one of which is used in the BMW F800S motorcycle.

The Can-Am Spyder has electrically boosted power steering, 5-speed trans with electronic actuation as a $1500 option, reverse gear, Traction Control, Stability Control and anti-lock brakes with electronic brake-force distribution.  It uses a liquid-cooled, 998cc, DOHC 106hp Rotax V-Twin, basically the same engine used in the Aprilia sport bikes, but it's slightly detuned from it's original 130hp and geared down for this application when one keeps in mind the extra weight of a 3-wheeler versus a sportbike.  The engine powers the rear wheel through a toothed, carbon-reinforced rubber belt and the exhaust meets CARB, EPA and Euro2 emission standards.  The Spyder is electronically limited to a 110-mph top speed and the factory estimates fuel mileage should be in the range of 30-35mpg even taking into consideration the sporting nature of its design and the riders.

The Can-Am Spyder will go on sale this fall in Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Wisconsin and Virginia, as well as the Canadian provinces of Alberta, British Columbia, Ontario and Quebec.  By next January, nine more states will be added as well as France and Spain.  Obviously, there's only so much production capability to start with its first year in production, so the Spyder can't realistically be made available to all markets even though the demand may be there, but production should be ramped up accordingly as it's clear just what the overall demand for this product will be long term.

After talking with their marketing department, I hear that the Spyder will meet US Federal regulations and be licensable in all 50 States.  You should have no problem buying a Spyder in another State and bringing it back to your State and getting it licensed, however, you may find that your local Can-Am dealer does not stock parts for it yet should you damage it somehow.  Ordering parts may not be any real problem and there's always internet sales, but don't expect new Spyder's to be sold on ebay.  Dealers are restricted from doing so, but used Spyder's may be available on ebay and as we've seen with cars in the past which come to mind like the Mazda Miata, Ford Thunderbird, Ford Cobra, Ford GT40, Hummer and more recently the Pontiac Solstice; individuals can sell their Spyder's on ebay and I guess that could include one that was new or used.  I guess we'll soon see what happens in that regard.

Here's an article in The Kneeslider about the Spyder
